What is Health Coaching?

Similar to a sports coach who assists an athlete to achieve better performance, a health coach empowers you to live your fullest life.  The relationship between you and your health and wellness coach is collaborative, and focused on your personal hopes and dreams for your wellness.  

Your health coach will work with you on issues such as weight loss, stress reduction, the management of chronic conditions, enhancing diet, exercise strategies, tobacco use, addiction and how to adapt if you’ve had a critical life experience such as a stroke or heart attack.

Motivational Interviewing is a key to Successful Health Coaching

At its core, motivational interviewing is powerfully respectful of a person for exactly where they are at in their life.  It takes into account the many motivators and doubts that a person struggles with on their path to change.

A coach using these techniques has a strategy for eliciting a client's own reasons for change and any failed attempts to facilitate change prior to meeting with your health coach.

Instead of a doctor or friend telling you that you need to exercise, a health coach might ask, “How would your life be different if you were exercising several times each week?”  Being told what to do, often engenders immediate resistance.  In health coaching with us, we understand that you make changes in your own life when you are ready and within your own time frame, not someone else's

We find that our clients genuinely appreciate this approach.  It builds trust between the coach and client, and empowers the client to take the lead in their own goals for change..   

Positive Psychology and Strengths-Based Coaching 

For too long, psychology has focused on what’s wrong with people or what needs to be fixed.  Our health coaching approach understands that you have incredible strengths, some of which you may or may not be aware of yet.   We will help you identify your strengths and help you to learn how to utilize your greatest strengths in pursuit of your wellness goals. 

Does Health Coaching Work?

Health coaching shows excellent results for many health concerns.  In a recent study health coaching showed significant results in systolic/diastolic blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, body weight, body mass, waist measurement and cardio fitness, quality of life and reduced hospital admissions in folks who struggle with COPD.

It’s no surprise then that we’re now seeing some insurance companies and EAPs cover these services.  And many organizations are starting to offer these services to their employees.  It’s a win-win for them, as their employees personally benefit and the company’s health care costs go down.

What Training is Required to be a Health Coach?

Coaching is still a new field and right now it is unregulated, so a person does not need to have a credential or diploma to call themselves a health coach.  However, there are several organizations who provide training and certification in the area of health coaching.  

We only use certified health coaches, who have invested in their training and education and certification.  We also use coaches who have tremendous passion for helping people with their wellness needs.  We strongly encourage you to seek out only trained and certified professionals within the health coaching field.

What Time Commitment and Cost Can I Expect for Health Coaching?

The time and coaching fees strongly vary depending on the coach you work with.  Fees are normally set according to your coaches experience, training and certification.  Health coaching fees through Kenosis Center are $200 for the intake session and $150 for all subsequent sessions.

Most of our health coaches will use the intake session to determine, with you, the meeting times that will work best with your schedule, availability and goals.  Often, on the front end, more frequent meetings bring excitement, anticipation, motivation and the building of momentum towards your goals.  Once you’ve gained momentum and agave begun achieving your goals, your coach and you will continually assess future needs and what may be required to maintain motivation, momentum and success.
